6:01 am
the vince lombardi trophy. and tonight the eagles are hoping to wrestle it from the spending super bowl champions, the patriots. the stage as minneapolis game day is here. the long wait is almost over. for generations of eagles fans that will hold a special place as the world watches. it is sunday morning, let us kick off our coverage. our starter bob brooks is live with security in philadelphia. jeannette reyes is with fans and trish hartman is on the super bowl shopping. >> ducis rodgers, jamie apody, sarah bloomquist are all in minnesota. look for their reports coming up later today on action news. let's take you live sky 6hd overlooking the philadelphia skyline proudly decked in green as the city gets behind our eagles. >> first chris sowers with the super bowl accuweather forecast.
6:02 am
a lot of rain today. people better have their umbrellas handy. >> periods of rain, some of it heavy at times. yesterday afternoon the computer modeling came in and it pushed the moisture in a little earlier than what we saw yesterday and it also has a little colder air in place than what we were looking at yesterday. a winter weather advisory for some far western counts. life stuff, just flurries at the moment but there's another band to the west that will get into our far western counties probably within the next hour or so. so because the moisture has arrived a little bit earlier than anticipated, again temperatures are colder, it's going to fall in the form of snow, it will get over to rain by late morning. it could be snowing light to moderately in these areas here. a minor accumulation is possible, a coating to an inch
6:03 am
in these far western counties. you can see the temperatures are down well below freezing. 26 in kutztown, new holland 29, potttown 29, quaker tps town 26 degrees. the numbers well below freezing and we're seeing below freezing numbers south and east as well. but all of these numbers will moderate quickly as the winds shift over the ocean. the slug of moisture out to the west, all of that marching east and it starts to get in here by late morning. so for philadelphia the immediate i-95 corridor, rain developing around midday, it's an all-rain event for the city. 44 degrees is the forecasted high. when i come back i'll break everything down for you, i'll show you what areas could see the snow and when it moves out of here in the accuweather 7-day
6:04 am
forecast. >> here we are. the final chapter in this fairy tale season is revealed tonight. >> for some it is unreal. for many people no carson wentz, no jeez -- jason peters, at one point no field goal kicker in a game no problem. those are just some of the massive hurdles the eagles team has had to get to super bowl lii. >> reporter: it is game day in just a few hours the players will be inside the building behind me. we asked the players what would be like to be on the field in this moment umental game. >> we get a chance to go out and show the world we'll be the only game on tv, our chance to show the borld that this team is capable of doing. >> we're just going out there having fun. we don't know what we don't know. so we're going out there having
6:05 am
fun, really looking forward to this opportunity. it's going to be a great game. >> we're excited. it's what it's all about. it's been a long time since we've been here. we're fortunate to be here. >> telling younger players cherish this stuff. especially a rookie six months ago he wasn't on a team and now he's at the super bowl. take full advantage and be appreciative. >> reporter: all week long coach has been stressing to his players to seize this moment. with the birds at the super bowl, i'm, channel 6 action news. >> minneapolis is a 17-hour drive from philadelphia, win or lose, police are set for the aftershocks. >> police and the city leaders have rolled out their own game plan to hand this will all. bob brooks continues our coverage live from center city. the city will be on fire either way the outcome goes in the
6:06 am
game. >> reporter: no doubt about it we certainly hope it's the most fire it can be. after a win. you can see here city hall these are many hot spots police want to keep an eye on. i will say people are not being discouraged to celebrate, but they are being told don't cause any damage or you will be dealt with. i want to bring up a video police say hot spots around, cottman, frankfurt. police spoke with him earlier this week. there's a plan for no damage. they will not be greasing poles in town rather they have a different plan. the commissioner doesn't want to sound negative and discourage celebration after a big win. >> we will be ready. we will be out there with a sizeable contingent of officers
6:07 am
that will be seen by most and we will make every effort to know that we are about business, but we are still about the business of allowing people to celebrate as long as it's done peacefully. >> reporter: now to parking restrictions. they're going to go into effect at 2:00 p.m. today and they will be in effect until tomorrow morning 3:00 a.m. that is no park frg arch to pajs around city hall, from dicken son of oregon avenue. no parking on either sides of the street. median parking as well. no parking in the middle of the street until 3:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. bob brooks channel 6 action news. >> action news reporter jeannette reyes live at the may fair diner. you're up the road from frankfurt and cottman. >> reporter: this is exactly the area that bob was referring to as far as where the crowds
6:08 am
gathered a couple of weeks ago. imagine that, i don't know, five or six times, as many crowds. especially if the eagles win the game. this diner kind of a go-to spot for fans, a proximity to where the crowds gather has a lot to do with it. you'll see people strictling in as the -- trickling in as the morning progresses. and there was a little bit of excitement, only a few arrests. what is it about the diner? >> all the good food. the best waitresses in the city. >> it's just been here for so long. it's a landmark. >> i can't believe they won. i'm like stunned. if they can do that, this he -- they can do this too.
6:09 am

6:13 am
super bowl sunday. >> we were joking around on the break. the radar is going to look as green as this tie. everything still seems to be pretty much on par as to what we were thinking yesterday corresponding this rain. the timing still -- concerning this rain. the timing still looks good. the only fly in the ointment you can say we have a little bit colder air in the western suburbs, so with the moisture arriving a tad bit earlier, it could initially begin to snow
6:14 am
and then go over to rain. there could be a minor accumulation. in the meantime for the i-95 corridor, pregame party, rain heavy at times, 42 degrees. during the game, same thing, rain heavy at times. 44 degrees and just as the game is coming to an end, most of the rain should be winding down. at that point temperatures begin to crash down into the 30s and we start to see the winds pick up out of the northwest at 15-25 miles per hour. tomorrow morning we will have blustery wind chills around the region. 30s showing up for just about everywhere. you have to remember the freezing mark is right here. so if you're below freezing as that moisture comes in, there could be slick spots out there across the far western counties. south and east a lot of these numbers are going to climb quickly. out in through here that cold may hang tough cause problems. this first batch causing a brief snow shower getting into
6:15 am
allentown, bethlehem, all of that pushing north eastward. that second round pushing through south central pennsylvania, harrisburg, even as far north as williamsport starting to see light snow. stopping the clock around midday. light snow, very light snow for the far western suburbs, lancaster, reading, potts tps town, allentown. but look how quickly this rain marches to the north. by 4:00 it's raining everywhere. that rain is heavy at times during the game. that is rain coming down in sheets around that will continue through about 9:30 or 10:00 this evening and it comes to end from west to east. by 11:00 most of the area is clear. by that points the winds have shifted we're starting to dry and temperatures are crashing and wind chills will start to be
6:16 am
an issue after midnight. rain begins around midday. it may briefly start as a wintry mix or snow north and west of the city. pottstown, quakertown, points north and west of there. heavy driving rains this evening, ending between 9:30 to 11:30 from west to east. this map pretty much looks the same as what we had yesterday. there could be a coating to an inch initially and that quickly washes away. 2-4 inches for the poconos. the only concern would be between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. we could see slick spots in these counties. otherwise you're looking at a cold driving rain for today. wilmington 44, trenton 46. these are late-day highs. millville 49, cape may 48. and overnight tonight rain this evening, it will be ending after
6:17 am

6:31 am
temperatures are cold enough. this is part of the reason why the national weather service has issued a winter weather advisory for the far western counties becaus is arriving a little bit earlier than anticipated and we're down into the 20s now. quakertown 27, pottstown 29, lake harmony 28 degrees. by the time the moisture gets this far east, the numbers will be up into the 40s. no issues for frozen precipitation for philadelphia. we're quiet through mid morning and that precip arrives midday around philadelphia and later this afternoon through the evening hours it will be coming down again in sheets. heavy, driving, soaking rains from let's say 2:00 on. most of this precipitation ending between 9:30 and 11:00 this evening. so looking ahead here, heavy rain this afternoon. the evening could begin as a
